Soundproofing Panels for Apartments: Renter-Friendly Options
Updated
Soundproofing panels for apartments make your own unit less echoey, but they don't do much against a neighbor's voice or TV. Blocking takes weight and sealed gaps, and surface panels don't add either one. As a renter, you'll get the most out of panels that come off without damage, plus a few cheap seals at the door and outlets that really do cut incoming noise.
What panels can and can't do in an apartment
Acoustic panels for soundproofing an apartment absorb echo inside your unit, and you can expect well under 3 STC points from them on the wall you hang them on. A 2 in. fiberglass panel weighs about 0.5 lb/sq ft (3.0 lb/cu ft × 2 ÷ 12, from the Owens Corning 703 data sheet (opens in a new tab)), and in USG lab tests (opens in a new tab) a full drywall layer at 2.2 lb/sq ft only raised an insulated wall 3 points.
Walls between units built to the IBC already have to reach STC 50 in the lab, or 45 when tested in the field (LADBS bulletin on IBC Section 1206 (opens in a new tab)). If you can still hear a neighbor through a wall like that, look for leaks first: the hallway door, the outlets and shared ducts. The short answer on panels is in do soundproof panels work in apartments.
Renter-friendly soundproofing panels: mounting without damage
Renter-friendly soundproofing panels are the ones you can hang with removable strips or stand on the floor. Idaho Legal Aid lists "nail holes, pin holes, or small cracks in the wall" as normal wear and tear and "gaping holes in walls" as damage (wear and tear guide (opens in a new tab)). Your state and your lease decide the details.
Example: Command Large Picture Hanging Strips (opens in a new tab) hold 15 lb on 4 pairs in 3M's spec table, for frames up to 24 x 36 in. A 2 x 4 ft GIK FlexRange acoustic panel (opens in a new tab) weighs 4 to 8 lb, well within that weight, but at 24 x 48 in. it's bigger than 3M's frame limit. Hanging it by its rear wire on one picture nail (one small hole) is the more secure way to go.
Self-adhesive soundproofing panels
Self-adhesive soundproofing panels are mostly thin felt or foam tiles, and thin felt doesn't absorb much: a 12 mm PET felt panel rates NRC 0.45 mounted flat (Acoufelt spec sheet (opens in a new tab)), compared with 1.00 for 2 in. fiberglass board. Think of them as decor that takes the edge off echo.
Read up on the adhesive before you peel anything. Auralex calls its Foamtak and Tubetak adhesives permanent and says removal "will damage the product and most wall surfaces" (Auralex adhesives spec sheet (opens in a new tab)). If a tile's backing isn't sold as removable, put it up with removable strips instead.
Freestanding soundproof panels
Freestanding soundproof panels stand on their own feet, so they don't need a wall at all, and they move out with you. The GIK FreeStand (opens in a new tab) is 2 x 5 ft, 2 in. thick, NRC 1.05 and 11 lb, at $199 list as of October 2026.
They work best next to a desk for video calls, or behind a sofa in a room with hard floors.
Best soundproofing panels for noisy neighbors
For noisy neighbors, the best things a renter can buy aren't panels. They're seals that close up the gaps sound sneaks through. In PABCO's example (opens in a new tab), an unsealed 1/8 in. gap 1 ft long drops a wall from STC 46 to 36, and no panel can win that back. Whether panels work for noisy neighbors gets the full answer on its own page.
Door sweep and gaskets
Seal
Closes the gap under and around the hallway door. Screws or adhesive, and it comes off at move-out.
Outlet putty pads
1/8 in.
PABCO's QuietPutty pad is 7 1/4 in. square, one per outlet box on the shared wall.
Foam earplugs
NRR 29
3M E-A-R Classic (opens in a new tab); 3M says to expect about half, so roughly 15 dB.
Freestanding panel
Echo only
Makes your unit calmer, but doesn't block the neighbor.
Shut off power at the breaker before you take off an outlet cover, or ask the landlord to put the pads in. For more on shared-wall fixes, see how to block noise from a shared wall, and for a renter-safe order of work, see how to soundproof apartment walls.
If sealing doesn't fix it, the problem is the neighbor, not your walls, and how to soundproof against loud neighbors covers that route.
FAQ
Can I put mass loaded vinyl on a rental wall?
Only hung loose, and it doesn't block much that way. 1 lb/sq ft MLV rates STC 26 in Johns Manville's lab test (opens in a new tab), but a sheet hanging with open edges leaks around the sides, the same way PABCO's 1/8 in. gap cost a wall 10 points.
Do I need my landlord's permission for panels?
Freestanding panels don't touch the walls, so there's nothing to alter. Before you drill, read the lease's alterations clause, and ask in writing if it's unclear.
Will panels stop footsteps from upstairs?
No. Footsteps travel through the floor framing, and the fixes are on the upstairs floor or a decoupled ceiling. See soundproofing a ceiling against neighbors.
Do panels keep my noise from bothering neighbors?
Not much. The short answer is in do acoustic panels keep sound out or in. For music or a home studio, the studio soundproofing panels page covers isolation. There are more answers in the soundproof panels FAQ, and the soundproof panels guide explains what blocks sound.
