How to Install a TV on Acoustic Wall Panels

Updated

To install a TV on acoustic wall panels, bolt the mount through the panels into the studs, and put a solid plywood spacer behind the mount plate where the slats and felt would be. The panels can't hold the TV. They hang on drywall screws that Primacoustic's slat wall manual (opens in a new tab) says to tighten "only enough to hold the panel in place," and soft felt under a lag bolt squishes down and lets the mount shift.

The mount's own limits still apply. A typical Sanus mount manual (opens in a new tab) calls for 2x4 studs, 5/16 by 3.5 in. lag bolts driven into the center of the stud, no more than 5/8 in. of drywall, and a wall that can hold five times the weight of the TV and mount. It also says never to install into drywall alone. Panels don't add any strength.

Side section to scale: 2x4 stud, 1/2 inch drywall and a 0.8 inch slat panel totaling 1.3 inches of covering; a plywood spacer replaces the slats and felt behind the mount plate; a 4.5 inch lag bolt reaches the stud because the mount's spec of 3.5 inch bolts through 5/8 inch covering needs 0.7 inch more bolt
A solid spacer plus a longer bolt gives the mount the bite into the stud it was built for.

Example: 1/2 in. drywall plus a 0.8 in. slat panel is 1.3 in. of covering, about 0.7 in. more than the 5/8 in. the mount allows. So 3.5 + 0.7 = 4.2 in. of bolt at minimum; buy 4.5 in. lags in the same 5/16 in. diameter.

That puts you outside the wall conditions the maker lists, so check the longer bolts with the mount's support line before you hang a big TV.
